Purcell, Deirdre

Deirdre Purcell was born in Dublin in 1945.

A former Abbey actress, among her roles has been as Chrisine opposite Donal McCann in Drama at Inish; Miss Frost in The Ginger Man; and Pegeen in The Playboy of the Western World.

Her novels include A Place of Stones (Dublin, Townhouse/London, Macmillan, 1991); Falling for a Dancer (Town House/Macmillan, 1993), which was filmed, starring Liam Cunningham; Francey (Macmillan 1994); Full Circle (Town House 1995); Sky (Town House 1995/Macmillan 1996); Love Like Hate Adore (Town House, 1997), which was shortlisted for the Orange Prize; Entertaining Ambrose (TownHouse, 2000); Marble Gardens (Dublin, New Island Books, 2002); Children of Eve (London, Headline Book Publishing, 2005); Tell Me Your Secret (Headline Book Publishing, 2006); and The Husband (Dublin, Hachette Books Ireland, 2016).

Her non-fiction includes Be Delighted: A Tribute to Maureen Potter (New Island Books, 2004).
Also a former TV and press journalist, she has been awarded The Benson & Hedges and Cross awards for journalism.

She lives in West Cork.
