Seán Ó Tuama was born in Cork in 1926.
He was former Professor of Modern Irish Literature in University College Cork, and a visiting Professor in Harvard, Oxford and in the University of Toronto.
He poetry collections include Faoileán Na Beatha (Baile Átha Cliath, An Chlochomar Tta., 1962); and Death in the Land of Youth: New and Selected Poems of Seán Ó Tuama (Cork University Press, 1997).
He was the author of five plays, including Gunna Cam agus Slabhra Oir. Drama Vearsaíochta Thrí Ghníomh (Baile Átha Cliath, Sairseal Agus Dill, 1978, with a cover design by Paul Funge).
An Grá in Amhráin na nDaoine (An Clochomhar Tta., 1960), and An Grá i bhFilíocht na nUaisle (1988) are amongst his most notable academic works, while An Duanaire: Poems of the Dispossessed (Dublin, Dolmen Press, 1981) – a bilingual anthology with Thomas Kinsella – was a landmark of its kind.
In 1991 he published a book of literary essays, Cúirt, Tuath agus Bruachbhaile, and an anthology of 20th century poetry in Irish, Coiscéim na hAoise Seo.
His other work included Nuabhearsaiocht 1939-1949 (as editor, Baile Átha Cliath, Sairseal agus Dill, 1950); The Facts About Irish (Corcaigh, An Comhar Poiblí, 1964); The Gaelic League Idea (Cork, Mercier Press, 1972); and Repossessions, selected essays on the Irish literary heritage, (Cork University Press, 1995).
He died in September 2006.
