John McAuliffe was born in 1973 and grew up in Listowel, County Kerry.

His collections are A Better Life (Loughcrew, Co Meath, The Gallery Press, 2002), shortlisted for a Forward Prize; Next Door (The Gallery Press, 2007); Of All Places (The Gallery Press, 2011), a Poetry Book Society recommendation; and The Way In (The Gallery Press, 2015), which was joint winner of the Michael Hartnett Award.

In 2000 he won the RTE Poet of the Future Award and, in 2002, the Sean Dunne National Poetry Award. He has been director of the Poetry Now Festival in Dún Laoghaire since 2004.

He teaches poetry at the centre for new writing at the University of Manchester.
