John F. Deane
John F. Deane was born on Achill Island in 1943.
His poetry collections are Stalking After Time (Dublin, Profile Press, 1977); High Sacrifice (Dublin, Dedalus Press, 1981); Winter in Meath (Dedalus Press, 1984); Road with Cypress and Star (Dedalus Press, 1988); The Stylized City, Selected and New Poems (Dedalus Press, 1991); Walking on Water (Dedalus Press, 1994, reprinted 1995); Toccata and Fugue (Manchester, Carcanet Press, 2001); Manhandling the Deity (Carcanet Press, 2003); and A Little Book of Hours (Carcanet, 2008).
La Cité Stylizée, a collection translated into French, was published by Parole d'Aube, Lyon, France, in 1996.
His translations include The Youth of Don Quixote from the Romanian of Marin Sorescu (Dedalus Press, 1984); The Wild Marketplace, from the Swedish of Tomas Tranströmer (Dedalus Press, 1985); For The Living & the Dead, Tomas Tranströmer, (Dedalus Press, 1993); and The Distribution of Bodies, from the French of Jacques Rancourt, 1995.
His fiction includes the short stories Free Range (Dublin, Wolfhound, 1994); and The Coffin Master and Other Stories (Belfast, Blackstaff Press, 2000); and three novels, One Man's Place (Dublin, Poolebeg Press, 1994); Flightlines (Poolebeg Press, 1996); and Undertow (Blackstaff Press, 2002). He founded Poetry Ireland, and is the editor of The Dedalus Press. A member of Aosdána, he was shortlisted for the 2003 T.S. Eliot Award. He lives in Dublin.
