Jean Valentine

Jean Valentine was born in Chicago and has lived most of her life in New York City.
Among her books are Dream Barker and Other Poems (Yale University Press, 1965); Pilgrims (New York, Farrar, Straus & Giroux,1969); Ordinary Things (Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 1974); The Messenger (Farrar, Straus & Giroux,1979); Home. Deep. Blue New & Selected Poems (Alice James Books, 1989); The River at Wolf (Alice James Books, 1992); The Under Voice, Selected Poems (Galway, Salmon Publishing, 1995); Growing Darkness, Growing Light (Carnegie Mellon Press, 1997); The Cradle of the Real Life (Wesleyan Poetry, 2000); Door in the Mountain: New and Collected Poems 1965 - 2003 (Wesleyan Poetry, 2004); and Little Boat (Wesleyan Poetry, 2007).
She is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, The Bunting Institute, The Rockefeller Foundation and The New York Council for the Arts. Among the prizes she has won are The Yale Series of Younger Poets Award, The Maurice English Prize and The Sara Teasdale Award.
She has lived in Ireland and now lives in New York, where she is the State Poet of New York for 2008-2010.
