Margaret Hooks was born in Belfast.

She has written extensively on the life and work of artists, among them Frida Kahlo, Tina Modotti and Edward James. Her writing has appeared in Vogue, The Guardian, Afterimage, Elle, Grand Street, The Observer magazine and The Photograph Collector.

During the 1990s Hooks lived in Mexico City where she was a correspondent for The Irish Times and then for ARTnews magazine. In 1998, she became a Contributing Editor for ARTnews in the United States.

Her books are Tina Modotti: Photographer & Revolutionary (London, Harper Collins, 1993/New York, Da Capo Press, 2000); Tina Modotti: Masters of Photography (New York, Aperture, 1999); Manel Armengol (Madrid, Turner, 2007/ New York, A-R Press, D.A.P., 2008); Tina Modotti (London, Phaidon Press, 2005); Frida Kahlo: Portrait of an Icon (Madrid,
Turner/London,Bloomsbury/New York, D.A.P., 2003); and Surreal Eden (New York, Princeton Architectural Press, 2007).

Her biography of Tina Modotti has been translated into eight languages.

She currently lives between Ireland and Spain.
