John Doorty was born in 1959 in Co. Clare.

He is the author of the poetry collection Into the Heart of It: Daley Dialogues and Other Poems (Rathbane Publishing/Cló an Rátha Bháin, 1997); and a guide book A Place Called Doolin; (Rathbane Publishing/Cló an Rátha Bháin, 2002). John founded and edited the Irish literary journal Departures in 1987. Departures later became New Series: Departures and in total he produced and edited ten issues between1987 and 2002.

He is also a playwright and has written and performed in the acclaimed one-man show, Out of the Heavens in Showers, based on the life of traditional musician, Micho Russell – which toured in the US and to many theatre venues in Ireland from 1998-2000. He has received a number of awards and residencies including a travel bursary from the Arts Council in 1998. In 2006 he established newdepts as a literary and cultural publishing house.

He lives in Co Clare.
